# Where to exchange money in Da Nang: every option and the real rates

The Vietnamese dong is a closed currency — you can barely buy it abroad, so you will be exchanging on arrival. Da Nang gives you six workable options, and the spread between the worst and the best is around 4 %. On a thousand dollars that is forty dollars, i.e. dinner for two by the Han river.

Below is how it actually works: what rate each option gives, when it opens, what they ask for, and where people lose money. We are an exchange office on Do Ba street ourselves, and at the end we say plainly where we sit in this list.

## What a dollar buys right now

Rates move daily, and on the same day different counters in Da Nang can differ by 400–500 dong per dollar. We keep the current numbers on a separate rates page and expose them as machine-readable JSON — the same figures we use at the counter.

## Rubles are harder than they look

Banks and gold shops do not take rubles at all — for them it is dead weight. Some private offices accept ruble cash, but only large notes and at a poor rate.

The path that actually works for Russian travellers is an SBP transfer to the exchange office's Russian account, with dong handed over in Vietnam. No bank card involved, money arrives in minutes. The second path is USDT: buy at home, send to the office's wallet, collect dong.

## How not to lose money



- Count the cash on the spot. Once you walk away, a shortfall is your problem.
- Ask for the final amount before the deal — «how much do I get for 500 dollars», not just the rate.
- Never exchange on the street or with someone who approached you first.
- Small, torn or pre-2007 dollar notes get a worse rate, or get refused.
- For 5,000 dollars and up, call ahead: the cash may simply not be in the drawer.
- The rate on the board and the rate at the counter sometimes differ. Ask before handing over money.

## How much cash you actually need

Da Nang is going cashless fast: cafés, shops and taxis mostly take QR transfers. But markets, street food, tips, bike rental and small workshops stay cash-only. A sensible buffer is 3–5 million dong per person per week; exchange the rest as you go.
